Sales professionals that rely on LinkedIn to assist them in acquiring and growing customers should consider a LinkedIn Profile refresh if they’d like to stand out above the competition.

The LinkedIn profile page should provide customers and prospects with more than an employment history. The profile page should establish the seller and her organization’s brands.

Connecting with prospects and customers is an essential first step to building relationships and strengthening personal and corporate brands. Keeping one’s LinkedIn profile fresh and relevant is the second.

Here are four best practices to refresh a seller’s LinkedIn profile to improve customer and prospect impressions and engagement.
1 – Add or update your current job role description
Job descriptions containing “I/we provide/sell engineering services” or “I sell telecommunications to financial services firms” indicate that the salesperson’s priority is selling widgets, not solving business challenges.
An ideal description would include, “I work with leading financial services firms to help them improve revenue, profit, and customer service. We do this by enabling the strategic use of telecommunications and IT infrastructure.”
2 – Post relevant and intelligent content that prospect will value
There’s a ton of LinkedIn content that is inappropriate for helping build brands and relationships. When a prospect connects with the seller on LinkedIn, they see the content the seller has posted.
Relevant content provides value or insight into how the seller or organization thinks about business challenges, industry trends, ideas, thought leadership, best practices, etc. The volume of content is not essential as the quality and relevance. Less can undoubtedly be more.
3 – Consider updating the profile picture if it’s more than five years old
You’ve heard the dating site stories when one of the parties shows up looking nothing like their picture? The same goes for LinkedIn.
The profile picture is how people are introduced to you, and it governs their impressions from the start. Sellers strive for good first impressions, so ensure the profile picture is current. Make sure the new image is recent, looks like you, and shows what you would wear to a meeting with a prospect.
4 – Add a background photo
The profile background photo is a visual element that grabs the visitor’s attention, sets the context, and shows a little more about what matters to you. A good background photo helps your page stand out, engage attention and stay memorable.

Sellers should maintain a current and up-to-date LinkedIn profile to stay ahead of the competition, improve relationships, and strengthen the personal and corporate brand.
